I love this spicy cheese sauce recipe for various reasons,

What ingredients are in Jalapeno cheese sauce

Butter. What else can we think about making it a clean creamy sauce without butter? The ultimate choice however you may substitute with coconut oil.

All-purpose flour. Make the cheese sauce rich and velvety. However, choose arrowroot powder as a gluten-free option.

Fresh & pickled jalapeno. Adding both these give an intense flavor and provides a peppery smack. The combination of fresh and pickled jalapenos packs the flavors and creates a delicious base for the cheese sauce.

Garlic powder. A teaspoon of garlic powder infuses with the sauce and creates an excellent dimension. As a substitute, garlic powder can be replaced with fresh garlic clove.

Whole milk. A critical element in this jalapeno cheese sauce. Feel free to substitute with low-fat milk or vegan milk

Paprika. Adds an appetitive orangish color, and bridges between the jalapeno’s heat and the creamy cheese. To increase the heat add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder.

Cheddar cheese. Sharp cheddar gives a depth of flavor. However, mild cheddar or pepper jack cheese would also be equally good.

Lemon juice/wine/pickled juice. This adds a touch of freshness and prevents the sauce to become stringy.

How to make Jalapeno cheese sauce

Melt the butter. Place a saucepan over medium heat, add butter and allow it to melt.

Add in flour and whisk vigorously until it blends with the butter. Make sure the flour should not get burnt.

Add minced fresh jalapeno, garlic powder, milk, paprika, and salt. 

Simmer the heat and stir continuously until the sauce thickens. This stirring process is done quickly and would take anywhere between about 3 minutes. Switch off the heat.

And finally, stir in minced pickled jalapeno and transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy with burgers, chips, or nachos.

The spicy cheese sauce is best to serve with

Spicy dishes. The hot and spicy appetizers like jalapeno poppers would be excellent with this jalapeno cheese sauce.

As a base sauce. Great to act as a base sauce for mac and cheese or creamy corn pasta.

Nacho. Serve over a bed of crispy nachos and make a quick and delicious game-day snack in a flash of a second.

Burger. Add up as a layer in your burger and feel the punch.

Others. Also wonderful when served with French fries, pretzel, garlic knots, and hot dogs.

  • 3 slices whole wheat bread, torn
  • 1 cup fat-free milk, divided
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1-1/2 pounds lean ground turkey
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 6 whole wheat hamburger buns, split
  • 6 lettuce leaves
  • 6 slices tomato


  1. In a large bowl, soak bread in 1/2 cup milk for 1 minute. Add the garlic, mustard, salt and pepper. Crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties; set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine flour and remaining milk until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from the heat. Add cheese and jalapeno; stir until cheese is melted. Keep warm.
  3. Lightly oil the grill rack. Grill patties, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from the heat for 5-7 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 165° and juices run clear.
  4. Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato and jalapeno cheese sauce.

Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger - This Is How I Cook


Prep time 20mins

Cook time 40mins



  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper t otaste
  • 1 large onion, sliced thinly
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 4 tomato slices
  • 4 large iceberg lettuce, leaves, torn into pieces
  • 4 slices cheddar
  • Soft buns

jalapeño sauce

  • 4 tablespoons mayo
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons whisky
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon jalapeños, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon mustard

  • 1/
    teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced

  • 1/
    teaspoon onion powder

sweet potato fries

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 cm fries
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons potato starch
  • Fine sea salt to taste


  • Step 1

    To make the fries. Preheat the oven to 220C or 425F. Place the sweet potatoes in a large bowl filled with ice water, let sit for 5 minutes. Drain and lay them between two clean kitchen towels. Massage a little, they should be as dry as possible. Place in a dry bowl, toss with thyme, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika and potato starch, season with salt. Spread the fries in an even layer on a baking sheet. Do not overcrowd the pan, if needed, divide the fries between 2 baking sheets. Transfer to the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, flip and bake for 10-15 minutes more. You want the sweet potatoes to be tender, yet crisp.

  • Step 2

    Combine all the ingredients for the sauce in a small bowl.

  • Step 3

    Combine beef with heavy cream, onion powder, salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal pieces. Using both hands, work meat into smooth balls, compacting very lightly. Press down to flatten each ball into a 2 cm thick patty. I highly recommend using a round biscuit-cutter to help forming uniformly shaped patties. It makes a huge difference.
    Heat a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over high heat. Melt the butter, add the patties and thinly sliced onion. Cook, without any touching, until edges are browned and you can see juices pooling in the center of patties, about 3 minutes. Then flip them over and place a slice of cheese on each burger. Cook for 2 minutes more. Never cook the burgers all the way through. The best doneness, is medium. The burger should have deeply caramelized crust on both sides, but you’ll still see juice oozing out from the mid-section. The skillet should be very hot to achieve this.
    Transfer burgers to a plate. Now place the buns into the same skillet, toast the buns, side down, until golden and crisp around the edges.

  • Step 4

    Start to build your burger. Spread a tablespoon of the sauce on bottom halves of the buns. Place a slice of tomato, lettuce, burgers and caramelized onions. Top with a tablespoon of sauce, close with the top bun, and serve with sweet potato fries and some extra sauce. Enjoy!

What is an aioli?

 I wasn’t sure if I should call this a spicy aioli or tarter sauce. An aioli (according to wiki) is a Mediterranean sauce made of garlic and olive oil but some regions use emulsifiers such as egg.

You will see a lot of places use the term to denote flavored mayonnaise essentially.

Tartar sauce (according to wiki) is based on either mayonnaise  or aioli with certain other ingredients added. Aioli sounds better to me so I’m going with that but you can call it whatever you want.

Recipe ingredients for the burger sauce.

For this burger sauce I used mayonnaise, fresh garlic, and both pickled jalapeño rings (plus a little of the juice) and a fresh jalapeño. I used the pickling juice for acid but you could also use lime juice.

The pickled jalapeños do not have much heat in my opinion but I like the vinegary, pickled taste. The fresh jalapeños gives it some heat but also gives the sauce a nice fresh pepper taste.

Together with the garlic and mayonnaise you have yourself a delicious condiment.  

How to make an easy jalapeño aioli.

Step 1: First add the fresh and pickled jalapenos and garlic to a small food processor. You want to finely mince the ingredients. You can also use a blender or do it by hand. It should look like this:

Step 2: Next add the mayonnaise and pickling juice. I made mine a little runny so that it would pour easily but if you want it a bit thicker, add a little more mayonnaise.

Other things to use this aioli with.

We use this sauce on burgers but I also like to dip my sweet potato fries in it. It would tasty as a dipping sauce for steamed veggies too. I have a similar sauce that I use on my low carb crab cakes.

Really there is not much I would use it for but definitely any type of burger or grilled chicken, fish, pork or potatoes.

You could also use this with any type of Mexican food. Maybe use some fresh cilantro leaves as well and it would be great on a fish taco!

What’s on our ultimate burger?

If you are up for making our ultimate burger all you need is good brioche burger buns, sharp cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, fresh tomato, lettuce and the jalapeno aioli. No bun for me so it’s a keto friendly burger. 

When I originally wrote this post the ultimate burger involved grilled onions and peppers instead of the fresh tomato and lettuce. This is an easier and fresher tasting burger in my opinion (and less work!)

What You’ll Need and Easy Swaps

Here’s everything you will need to make these tasty jalapeno burgers.

  • Lean ground beef: Make these burgers with any type of ground beef you like. Just remember that since these burgers have shredded cheese in the patty, they won’t dry out as easily as a normally lean beef burger, so I use 90-95% lean ground beef. Ground chicken or turkey will work as well.
  • Fresh jalapenos: Always opt for fresh jalapenos when you can but swap in pickled jalapenos if that’s all you have on hand. Poblano peppers or bell pepper would also work.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Any shredded cheese you have on hand can be used for these burgers including cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or gouda. 
  • Red onion: For some crunch and flavor, red onion is the perfect addition. If you don’t like fresh onion, leave it out or swap in onion powder.
  • Mustard: This acts as the seasoning blend in this burger and adds some moisture. Use whatever type of mustard you like to eat – yellow, Dijon, or whole grain.
  • Worcestershire sauce: This is the other main seasoning agent in these burgers. It’s salty and adds umami flavor to the burgers. Swap in some soy sauce or coconut aminos if you prefer.

Where else can I use  jalapeno cream cheese?

Jalapeno cream cheese  tastes great on bagels, or spread on a sandwich.

Shoot, I think stirred into mashed potatoes would be pretty awesome too.

Stir into scrambled eggs, use it as a dip for chips and one could even spread it on a tortilla and make a quesadilla.

Use it as a filling for stuffed peppers, or baby tomatoes.

It would also make a great enchilada filling mixed with shredded chicken.

My Manservant sure does love dinner but there aren’t many things that make him as excited as the word, “chile”.

This man loves his chile and in every form. Be it chile or chili, this man doesn’t care.

Bring on the chili topped enchiladas or burritos, eggs or chili cheese burgers.

Oh yeah-he loves chili on his hot dogs, too.

Chile is one way to my man’s heart and these jalapeno cream cheese burgers with a jalapeno cream cheese topping satisfy both of us!

I’ve not had to plan Father’s Day for the last few years because Manservant is always out travelling, so this year is all about making Manservant happy.

Actually I think he’s very happy because he’s home, and  being the smart man he is, I don’t think he’d mind if I served him cardboard on a plate!

However these jalapeno cream cheese burgers are much, much better!

These Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burgers are sure to please anyone. Luscious cream cheese, mixed with spicy jalapenos and onions is an easy way to dress up any burger!

2 Jalapenos, chopped (Seed them if you don’t want them too spicy.)

8 oz cream cheese

1/4 c minced onion

1 T mayonnaise

1/2 t garlic powder

1/4 t salt or to taste

Fresh roasted green chiles if desired

1 to 1 1/2 lbs of ground meat such as beef, turkey or chicken

I use brioche buns but this is your choice.

Using an immersion blender, cream the cream cheese until light and fluffy.

Stir in rest of ingredients and set aside until ready to use.

Prepare your burgers as you wish. Season them generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Grill to desired temperature. Feel free to throw in some extra chilies with the meat. Sometimes I also grate some jalapeno cheese and hide it in the middle.

I always butter and toast my buns on the grill. Watch carefully so they don’t burn.

When burgers are just about cooked, place a heaping tablespoon of jalapeno cream cheese on top of burger. Close grill and let heat briefly, then top with bun.

When ready to serve you may serve these with extra chile strips, some pickles, some chili and extra onion. We forego the ketchup and mustard, but that is up to you!


This cream cheese spread is also great on grilled chicken breasts or a bagel.
