We’ve made it to the beautiful city of Hội An in Vietnam and today we’re eating only Vietnamese food for the entire day! This is our first time properly trying authentic Vietnamese food and we can’t wait.
To start off we are having one of Vietnam’s most popular foods, a Banh Mi sandwich. Anthony Bourdain called Banh My Phuong’s mixed Banh Mi (Banh Mi Thap Cam) his favourite Banh Mi so we decided to head there. At Banh Mi Phuong we try both the mixed Banh Mi sandwich and the chicken Banh Mi.
For our second dish we try one that can only be found in Hoi An called Cao Lau. It can only be found in Hoi An because supposedly a main ingredient is water from a well called Ba Le. Ours was with pork but supposedly it can be made with shrimp, the rice noodles soaked in lye water, and then you add herbs, fresh greens and bean sprouts. We found our Cao Lau at Mi Quang Ong Hai (Mr. Hai Noodles).
Next up on our list we headed to one of the many coffee shops in Hoi An, Raw Coffee. For the first time here we tried the very popular Egg Coffee. Egg coffee is made with combining egg yolk and sweetened condensed milk, poured over coffee.
For our last stop we went to the very popular restaurant in Hoi An, Morning Glory. We had a few dishes here. Hoi An has its own version of Chicken Rice (a popular dish in Singapore), but made with shredded chicken called Cơm Gà Hoi An (Hoi An Chicken Rice). We tried that as well as some chicken and ginger dumplings (Banh Hap Nhan Gà) and fried pork spring rolls (Cha Gio).

Hospitality at its best!!
We are staying at the sunrise resort, walked over to the restuarant because it was the only one with a crows and now I know why.
The restuarant is family run, father,mother, daughters and son.
We asked if they have papaya salad and they ran out of papaya, we ordered another dish instead. And then the daughter came out and told us that her mom went to the market to get papaya for us!
Then we asked if we could buy cigarettes around here and the son offered to go get them for us, he left right away and was honest about the cost and returned our exact change…
the family is super interested in the customers. Asked us where we were from,how long were staying and even recommended tours for us.
The dishes are large! And very affordable, they don’t rip you off solely because they are across the street from high end resorts..
Food was amazing! Very fresh and authentic. Many restuarants in Hoi An add western flare to recipes and at NHU BAU everything stays authentic.
Much better than Morning Glory (a trip advisor favorite)!
Restuarant is casual so don’t worry about dress code… it is outdoors but they have plenty of fans and lanterns!

★ We have eaten at this restaurant twice already during our holiday in the Sunrise Premium Resort, which is literally just across the road. We love the Hoi An spring rolls. The pork in lemon grass and five spice is excellent too. A G&T is about US$2 and a large local beer is US50c. The starters and main courses are from US$2, which is great value. The hotel warns you that eating outside the hotel is risky. Don’t believe them. It is a quarter of the price. |

★ Arrived late and checked in at Sunrise Resort, this restaurant is just across the street. Comfortable food here, fresh seafood owned by a family. Very friendly grandpa who teach you how to eat the dishes. Reasonable price but also have fresh seafood like lobster available for about vdn2,300,000/kg. They don’t have a tank… if you want lobster the restaurant owner will call their supplier and get it for you and weight it at their restaurant. |
